They were manufactured with Saflex Structural (DG41) PVB interlayers and installed by Permasteelisa North America. The glass rooftop dome consists of a single-layered, braced steel structure covered in shingled glass panels-two panes per grid. Knippers Helbig Advanced Engineeringdesigned a unique “shingle” system to accommodate the complex geometry and high load requirements of the dome. The dome design required careful attention to material selection and design detail and lasted several years. The all-glass top half of the sphere resides over a rooftop terrace with jaw-dropping views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Hills. ![]() Located in the lower half of the sphere is the 1,000-seat David Geffen Theater. Glass bridges lead to the glass dome, designed for viewing the stars-both the Hollywood and celestial varieties. And its designer, “starchitect” Renzo Piano, is as well known as many of the actors celebrated inside the museum.ĭesigned by Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Genoa, Italy, the Academy Museum is housed in the historic May Company Building (now called the Saban Building) in Los Angeles. Hollywood superstars Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks helped spearhead the project. The museum gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look into how films are made while celebrating the power of the movies. In a town where glamour and glitz are practically a requirement, the giant glass sphere sparkles appropriately. And because one part of the brand-new museum-thesphere-has a glass rooftop dome, it required the superior structural capacity found in Saflex® Structural (DG41) PVB interlayers instead of standard PVB interlayers. The space set aside for temporary exhibitions opened with a major retrospective (running until early June, 2022) of Hayao Miyazai, the Japanese master of animation. So many iconic props that combine to make this museum so unique. There’s also the tablets from The Ten Commandments and the dressing gown worn by the riotous Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. True movie buffs will recognise Rosebud, the sled from Citizen Kane, and Judy Garland’s famous red slippers from The Wizard of Oz. the Extra Terrestrial Count Dracula the terrifying orc from Lord of the Rings the bloody replica of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s head made for Terminator and the life sized amphibian monster from The Shape of Water. But the main attraction for most visitors will doubtless be the chance to come face to face with E.T. You’ll get to see the other side of the set and the “magical” techniques used in making movies, thanks to the museum’s immersive, interactive curation. The museum’s galleries are spread over six floors, and take visitors on an epic journey across the history of the silver screen, from its first faltering steps in the late 19 th century, all the way through to the present day, special effects included. Occupying an old Art Deco warehouse built in the 1930s, the museum was designed by award-winning architect Renzo Piano, who added a giant metal dome to the original building, housing the David Geffen Theater, an ultramodern 1000-seat cinema.
